This work offers a nuanced, into a future where labor is continuously reshaped by artificial intelligence. 'Synergia' examines the delicate balance between personalized skill development and the pressures of a hyper-competitive, AI-driven workplace. Drawing from historical models of community support, and philosophical ideals of purpose, it raises insightful questions about the nature of work in an era of rapid technological change. It offers a reflection on the human drive for perpetual self-improvement, while considering the subtle yet the very powerful competitive forces that may constrain individual autonomy.
In this world, urban landscapes blend seamlessly with digital interfaces optimizing every moment of productivity. Communities, inspired by historical guilds, flourish as close-knit enclaves. A culture of constant self-improvement, guided by AI companions, is ubiquitous, pushing boundaries of personal and professional development. However, the pursuit of enhanced skill sets has led to a subtle but powerful competition, reflecting a nuanced tension between the ideals of personal fulfillment and the growing necessity of technological adaptation to maintain one's economic standing. The history includes many waves of strikes and workers wanting to have more control over upskilling.
This project invites critical reflection on the evolving nature of work. It touches on concerns of a future overly reliant on AI. Where do we, as individuals find room. Consider: how do we ensure equitable access to AI, when it impacts our work. What are the ethical implications?
Borg's design process for 'Synergia' began with the inspiration of rural Maltese community, historic guilds and the philosophical concept of eudaimonia, with digital culture dynamics. They meticulously constructed a 2027 scenario where AI-driven upskilling becomes integral to the economic landscape. The artist integrated historical work structures, models, and hypothetical legal framework to create a very plausible and nuanced design. Borg’s process is further characterized by a legalistic approach, drawing parallels between past labor practices ( mutual aid societies) and potential futures, and continental philosophies. These shaped the project into a tangible form reflecting collective growth facilitated by technology.
