Tupua's work explores the potential futures of social justice, work, and tourism through a critical lens deeply rooted in philosophical inquiry and environmental consciousness. Drawing on the rich cultural tapestry of traditional Samoan concepts, particularly 'Va,' Tupua seeks to unsettle conventional understandings of societal structures and provoke dialogue about alternative possibilities. Each project is a carefully constructed thought experiment, a speculative narrative designed to challenge deeply ingrained assumptions about how we organize our lives and interact with the world around us. The work deliberately avoids offering concrete solutions, presenting instead a series of provocations that require active engagement and critical reflection from the viewer. Tupua encourages a deep consideration of the long-term consequences of present day behaviour to highlight the importance of ethical consideration within the design sphere. Central to Tupua's practice is the method of speculative extrapolation, where existing philosophical and activist paradigms are pushed to their extreme logical conclusions, revealing both the utopian and dystopian potentials inherent within them. While abstract the projects are deeply engaging, the designs allow for a wide range of critical interpretations. Tupua is ultimately a storyteller that uses design to help build complex scenarios.
