Virtanen's work explores the potential intersections of augmented reality, architectural form, and social dynamics within meticulously crafted speculative scenarios. The projects forgo disruptive innovation in for creating nuanced, thought-provoking digital environments that question the presumed trajectory of technological advancement. By drawing on established architectural principles and the observed patterns of online social interaction, the designer creates highly detailed, theoretically rigorous models of possible futures. These models, presented as interactive augmented reality simulations, aim to subtly challenge the viewer's preconceptions about the relationship between physical space, digital information, and social structures. The focus of the artist is on building hypothetical AR environments that can be stable while still offering engaging user expeirences. The ultimate goal is not to predict the future, but to use the precision of speculative design to illuminate the complex interplay of forces shaping our present and to encourage a more critical, considered approach to the integration of technology into the fabric of everyday existence, even if only hypothetically. With the design, Virtanen wants to avoid the extremes cases of technology adoption, and create scenarios that are grounded, to open up the design space and to encourage designers the question themselves. The designer hopes to recontextualize the human aspect of human-computer interaction and highlight the human, with technology serving as a supporting feature.
